JohnR Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 Ahaah! Having just sorted mine out this weekend I think I know this one.... My tensioner was bouncing all over the place as well, and the engine a bit rattley on tickover. Also, there was a sort of squeal or chirping noise on hard lock. A search on the forum here suggested checking the alternator pulley, which has a one-way sprag clutch built into it. I bought a pulley from fords (they said they'd never sold one before! - usually change alternator!) and also swapped the tensioner. The result is it sounds like new again! To swap the pulley in situ, you need to buy a Sealey tool which is about Quote
Audiman Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 JohnR - Brilliant link. I've got a similar issue. On tickover when I turn the steering wheel I can hear and feel the pump belt slip and judder.I suspect it's a tensioner problem ? Also when I put the air conditioning on, I can hear a rumbling sound - is it the same belt ? Anyone got pictures of the alternative pulley or tensioner - what do I need to undo to get them out ? Quote
Audiman Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 Sorry chaps - that should have been Alternator Pulley. Any pictures and instructions as where to start etc would be appreciated Quote
seatkid Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 I've got a similar issue. On tickover when I turn the steering wheel I can hear and feel the pump belt slip and judder.I suspect it's a tensioner problem ?The power steering pump is driven by a smaller seperate belt. This is manually tensioned. Tighten it up. Quote
Audiman Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 Seatkid I hope your right - I phoned Fraud this afternoon, they told me that my galaxy has only two belts, the auxilary and timing belt.Fraud have already changed the auxilary belt (when I got the timing belt done). This didn't make any difference. Is it easy to get to the Steering pump belt and tighten the tensioner.I suspect I need to take the skid pan off ? Quote
seatkid Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 Sorry audiman, I was thinking Mk1. (dewsy) You have a Mk2 so yes the power steering pump is driven off the auxillary belt. Quote
Audiman Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 Just in the process of changing my alternator pulley.Cannot work out how to release the tension on the Auxilliary belt. The tensioner is bolted by three 13mm bolts, the alternator is bolted by 2 bolts. My tensioner is also bouncing up and down Quote
Taliska Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 This is so uncanny - I'm going to look at this same thing later today when I wake up! :-) Just going to do that test of the pulley to mechanism to see if it's that bit that's bust. Taliska Quote

nogdog Posted May 19, 2009 Report Posted May 19, 2009 (edited) Hi guys, I just had to change the alternator pulley on my Mk1 1.9 TDI for the same bouncing tensioner problem. At first I refused to believe the problem was with the pulley on the alternator as when the belt was removed the pulley was free to turn in both directions and so I went down the route of a new tensioner and tension wheel (bearing was about shot anyhow) These additions had no effect what so ever. I also replaced the bolt/screw that holds the tension wheel as the threads had started to see better days after being taken on and off so often. None of it was a wast of time I suppose but I should have gone for the pulley fist and saved the Edited May 19, 2009 by nogdog Quote
mikej Posted May 19, 2009 Report Posted May 19, 2009 Just for your info, having worked in a Bosch alternator plant dealing with customer samples for past 18 years i can confirm that INA is indeed the OEM part! it would be interesting to know the price difference in Ford and gsf, oh yeh they are a bloody swine to get off without the right tool :angry2: mike....
